Project Description:


This module of the SEWOH-GIAE Mozambique programme aims at improving the income, employment situation and regional food supply of smallholder farmers (especially women and youth) and linked up- and downstream enterprises in pigeon pea, rice and baobab value chains in the Beira corridor (especially in the Sofala province) by supporting innovations in the agriculture and food sector.
The innovation centre therefore supports partnerships, networking, and knowledge exchange/transfer between state actors, civil society, smallholder farmers and private sector actors along the target value chains to spread proven innovations on agricultural practices, value addition,  and marketing options. It will work closely with the ongoing programme “ProEcon – Improving Framework Conditions in the Private and Financial Sector” as well as other bilateral and regional programmes of the German development cooperation and other donors.
The four intervention areas of the SEWOH-GIAE Mozambique programme focus on:

(1)   Innovations in small farms;

(2)   Empowerment of upstream and downstream firms;

(3)   Strengthening the self-organisation of VC stakeholders;

(4)   Transnational exchange.

The selected consulting firm will be fully in charge of intervention areas 1 and 2, and will provide assistance to intervention areas 3 and 4. The envisioned activities for  intervention areas 1 and 2 include:

  • Support with the set up of value chain exchange platforms and with the networking activities of value chain actors and their representations
  • Development and implementation of integrated development partnerships with the private sector in the selected value chains (strategy development, marketing, collaboration, implementation support etc.)
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Active participation in the GIAE working groups on rice, organic agriculture and possibly others

Job Description:

The international team leader will be responsible to: 

  • Ensure the overall project implementation and financial management according to the indicators and contractual agreements;
  • Function as the main contact person for the project partners and client;
  • Ensure periodical M&E and reporting; 
  • Manage a team of two national long-term experts and a pool of international and national short-term experts;
  • Set up project relationships with private up- and downstream enterprises in the selected value chains; 
  • Develop strategies to improve the target value chains;
  • Conceptualize, acquire and prepare integrated development partnerships with the private sector and support the implementation of activities.

  • Master or Diplom in agriculture, agricultural trade or comparable studies
  • At least 10 years professional work experience in the field of rural development, preferably supporting development partnerships with the private sector and/or value chain development
  • At least 3 years professional work experience with project management and team leadership
  • Professional work experience in international development, preferably in Africa, experience in Mozambique is considered an asset
  • Technical know-how and experience in the areas of agricultural value chains and capacity development 
  • Partner and client oriented attitude and gender sensitive and efficient project implementation
  • Socio-cultural competencies
  • GIZ Capacity WORKS experienced
  • Experience with advisory support to up- and downstream enterprises on certification and organic agriculture
  • Fluent written and spoken German and English language skills as well as basic Portuguese or very good Spanish language skills
